I was selected by a panel of 3 judges as the winner out of 4 presenters (including myself) participating in the local event, and 6 in the regional, who gave a presentation for 10 minutes on a subject related to engineering and technology, and answered questions for a further five minutes. The criteria for judging were as follows: presentation skills (70%) and technical content (30%). I chose to speak about the polymorphism of cocoa butter in chocolate, and how it gives chocolate bars important qualities that we, as consumers, desire. I wanted my listeners to go away with the knowledge that Form V is the polymorph most desired by chocolate manufacturers, and a small insight into the understanding of fat bloom. Chemistry World Science Communication Competition 2014 finalist   Jan. 2015
My essay was 1 of 10, based on the theme of chemistry and art, that was shortlisted out of 75 entries to present a 2nd round entry at Burlington House in March 2015.

Santander Language Exchange Scholarship   Feb. 2012
Based on my academic excellence, I was awarded one of five scholarships with the value of £1,000 to enhance my Spanish language skills through experiential learning in Salamanca, Spain.

Plymouth Student of the Year Award (Vice Chancellors’ Enterprise Awards)   Sept. 2011
My excellent track record across my academic, enterprising and extra curricula achievements showcased my demonstrable skills, and I received one of twenty-six different awards for the students, staff and alumni of Plymouth University.

Placement on the Dean's List of Academic Excellence   Sept. 2011
At the end of each academic year, the Dean of Science and Environment publishes a list of all students who have achieved an exemplary performance on any year of study within Plymouth University. I was eligible for the Dean's List as I achieved a First Class degree in my final year classification.

The Plymouth Award   May 2011
This certificate awarded alongside my degree recognises and celebrates achievement outside of the taught curriculum. It involved the positive engagement of extra-curricular activities along with a written portfolio to reflect on skills learnt.

IAESTE UK Trainee of the Year 2010 Award   Nov. 2010
I won the prestigious award for a well-written account of my experience at the University of Buenos Aires. This included a personal depiction of the journey I took towards greater self confidence and professional development.

Academic qualifications


Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) 600   May 2014
Within two years of completing the GTA (see below), students can choose to undertake the assessed element of the course, the PGCAP 600, which is supported by two taught sessions. The formative assessment involves completing the GTA course, putting together a portfolio of work and taking part in a Peer Review of Educational Practice (PREP). The summative assessment involves a PGCAP tutor to examine your work and to decide whether you have achieved the learning outcomes or not, based on a portfolio of approximately 3,500 words. Those who complete the portfolio with a pass grade will gain professional accreditation as an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

Graduate Teaching Associates (GTA) Course   April 2012
The GTA is a short course for anyone interested in developing teaching skills in Higher Education. It is designed to support and develop individuals who are thinking about, or starting to teach. The course covers learning theories, session planning, teaching delivery, group work, evaluating teaching, assessment and feedback.
